"HOME"

"Home"

When one thinks of the idea of home, often the concepts of safety and comfort come to mind. Homes are a place where individuals are safe to express themselves and be who they are without judgment or persecution. One might believe that the contents inside may even describe its inhabitants. We instinctively surround ourselves with items that we enjoy, fit our personalities, and our way of living. These photographs investigate this very subject.

Home is a collection of photographs showing nude men inside of their homes. The photographs are taken in a place they feel describes them. We dress in order to show the best version of ourselves to the world. That is part of the reason I’ve made the choice to photograph the men nude. My interest is in looking beyond the layers we build up. I’m seeking another method of taking a portrait that describes the individual in a different way.

This project is ongoing. The images being created will cover different locations as well as different age groups. There is a connection between anthropology and art in this work, such as seeing the differences and similarities across various regions. When I first started exploring photography, I was deterred from using men as my subject. I was told that men are not as complex, interesting, or beautiful as women. I took this on as a personal challenge. In a way, these images are my way of dispelling that thought process.
